Thank you LeBron!

As someone who played basketball in University, other players and athletics that work hard to excel at their sport often inspire me.

This past week, this inspiration was taken to a whole new level, a level that caused me to stop and think about my life, purpose, and contribution in a whole new way.

I was inspired by someone who is arguable the best basketball player today. Yes, I’m talking about LeBron James.

Now what inspired me had nothing to do with what he did on the basketball court, although that man has given us many amazing moves to fill days of best plays of the week. No, what touched me on such a deep level was hearing the news of the new school he helped open, in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

His "I Promise" school opened its doors to 240 at-risk third- and fourth-graders.

The school, a project of the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron Public Schools,” provides the students with:

  • Free tuition
  • Free uniforms
  • Free breakfast, lunch, and snacks
  • Free transportation within 2 miles
  • A free bicycle and helmet
  • Access to a food pantry for their family
  • Guaranteed tuition for all graduates to the University of Akron

How amazing is this?!

Reading about this school had such an impact on me for many reasons. For one, this is a man who used his platform and wealth to do something many in his position have never done.

A true leader who a news reporter advised him to ‘shut up and just dribble’, when he spoke out against the unjust actions of the ‘president’ of the United States. No, he chose to BE the change he wished to see.

This is what living a life of purpose is all about. About taking the blessings given to you, and multiplying it in a way that affects others in a big way. About not forgetting where you can from, and using your resources to impact the lives of others, so they too can have a different option and do better for themselves.

If I were sitting across James right now, I would say a deep and heartfelt thank you. Thank you for the opportunity you are creating. For taking a stance and daring to be the change you wish to see. For not forgetting your past and promising to make things better for others.

It has inspired me to look at my life in a new way. From a lens of how I can contribute more. There has been something I’ve wanted to do in my community, but other ‘priorities’ always seem to take precedence. But I have been inspired to just take action; no matter how small I start… at least it’s a start.

I’m now committed to executing something dear to my heart, that I’ve come to call ‘Project: Holiday Magic”. It’s something that I know made a huge impact on me as a little girl, and it’s time for me to give back. If you live in my community of Durham Region, please stay tuned for more and on how you can help.

In a few days, I will celebrate my birthday and enter the last year of my thirties. It’ll definitively be a time of reflection for me, which is something I typically do, but I think on a deeper level this time. Looking at what I’ve accomplished and the kind of impact and contribution I want to make in my community and the world.

As we enter this new month of August and preparing for end of summer and looking to get back into a normal routine, I’d love to ask you, what type of impact and contribution you want to make?

Yes, it may not be building a school to the degree that LeBron did, but the smallest actions can cause a HUGE ripple of change. You can contribute to the life of people whom you may not even know, but they would feel it.

Are you ready for it?

The world needs it now more than ever.

It’s time!
