Start a New Love Affair!

This week is Valentine's Day week. While for some, it may be a time we consciously shower our partner with more love and romance, others may find this time difficult as it reminds them of feeling alone because they are not in a romantic relationship.

Whether you are in a relationship or single, I urge you this week to start a new love affair; one with yourself.

For anyone to get more of anything in their lives including more romance, it starts with loving yourself. This does not mean narcissistic behaviour but really truly opening your heart to your true being.

Ask yourself, "Do you treat yourself like you do a loved one, or a lover?" Especially at the start of a relationship when all you want to do is please that person and put their needs first. If the answer is no, then start this month by putting yourself and your needs first.

Treat yourself to a nice relaxing massage, buy that special something you've been admiring or look in the mirror and find at least 5 things you love about yourself, and show love and gratitude for them. Yes, at least 5! It could be that you are blessed to have the sight to be reading these words.

We tend to give so much to others and would cringe if we heard someone speak to our loved ones the way we speak to ourselves. Would you say to a small child the words you say to yourself? Sometimes we are the hardest on ourselves.

I know it's been said before, but we need to fill our own container with love so it pours out into the other person. To empty our container into someone else just depletes us, and then leaves us resentful and feeling lack. True love comes from the place of fullness, not emptiness.

As much as I loved the movie Jerry Maguire, I completely disagree with the thought that someone else is needed to complete me. No, I am complete on my own. My relationship with my husband just adds to my life. I am not less than without him, he just adds more to it.

So starting today, whether your'e single or coupled up, do something special for that very special someone in your life. That person who is with you 24/7 and will always be with you all the days of your life. You!
